Stallion Motors Nigeria on Friday delivered the new 2013
Passat, CC and the Jetta each slotted for sale this year as the company
prepares for the last half of the year. For 2013, the Volkswagen Passat carries
on basically unchanged except for the new rear lamps and the new 17” silver rims
on the full options package “I kinda preferred the old, much cooler black and
silver rims though”. The 2013 Passat CC also comes unchanged except for the
revised and front and rear lamps which now follow the new Volkswagen style and
are less curvy as compared to the previous model. I’m sorry I can’t upload
images of the Passat and CC, the guys at VW had them wrapped up like Egyptian
mummies.

The talk of town however was the new Jetta. (This new
model has been out since 2011 but we didn’t get it here till just now). It
looks absolutely gorgeous on the outside and I like that VW made it look more
like the Passat “a trimmed down version though”

It’s a shame that the same cannot be said about the
interior and the engine as they are at best very basic. I eavesdropped on the
discussion going on between the VW technicians here in Naija and I could sense
their disappointment. From their comments, they clearly didn’t approve. it
seems what VW did for the Jetta here in 9ja is to carry over the same 1.6litre
engine from the 2003 VW Bora while changing just the inlet manifold. It might
have made the car cheaper but we all didn’t approve especially since its Czech
sibling “the Skoda Octavia” features a turbo 1.8litre engine and a better
looking interior.
I want to believe that the model I saw was the base model
because it looked a bit too basic. It featured a lifeless looking radio with
two speakers and air conditioning. The
seats looked okay and there was plenty of head room, legroom and boot
space but please that centre console was really annoying and spoilt the whole
car in my eyes.
That said, the 2013 VW Jetta would probably go on sale
next month, if you’re thinking of buying one, you are better off with the new
Hyundai Elantra or the Honda Civic, and if you must buy a Volkswagen, get the
Skoda Octavia. Its just as spacious and it features the turbo-four 1.8 litre
engine from the Skoda Superb and it would definitely be a lot cheaper.
