Volkswagen Passat turns 40

Yep, the first generation Passat rolled off from auto manufacturers  on July 25 1973 just after VW acquired Audi. We here in Nigeria knew it as the Volkswagen Santana... Thats 40 years ago.

Over that period, there have been seven generations of the Passat leading to this current model that debuted in 2011. Within the 40 year period, Volkswagen has sold over 20 million Passat with various engines ranging from a 1.4 litre four cylinder 52kW engine to the 3.6 V6 209kW engine; in various forms like the three door hatchback of the 70's, the four door sedan it is now, the available five door estate version and the recently spawned sporty looking Passat CC (known as just the CC in some countries). Scroll down to view images of the Passat (then and now).

The Passat, fondly known by our Lagos cab drivers as Passa Passa is definitely one of the most used and widely available taxi cabs in Nigeria. A new Passat goes for N5Million and features head turning features.

PS. My Dad totally rocked the 3rd generation Passat Estate for about 5 years...
